Leading the way: The Power of Lines in Photography

Vanishing Point - This is where the parallel lines converge, giving you a sense
of depth. Think roadways, railroad tracks, piers, bridges. (Looks like you can
use this technique when heading out to photography Category 6: Bridges as
well.) That vanishing point not only draws your eye towards the subject, but the lines
serve to take the viewer’s eye right where you want it to go.
Directional Lines - include :
• Horizontal - used most often in landscape photography,
I can’t help but recall the scene in THE FABELMANS with John Ford explaining
the importance of horizons (Youtube clip below).
• Vertical - draw the eye up and down and can convey status. Think of a stand
of tall trees,
• Diagonal - draw the eye through the photo through a feeling of movement and
change,
• Curved - lines move the eye around the photo in a slower manner and can be
found everywhere in the natural world,
• Intersections - use more than one leading line to create intersections where
two or more of the techniques above are used to create depth and lead the
eye to the subject.
